Here is something i practice very often, take any harmonic mouvement, cadence and focus on the fact you have to consider each chord individually while playing over the changes..spelling the harmony and using Triads to create melodic lines and Counterpoints.

"Open" triads are another way to look at these 3 notes, just split them like 1-5-3 instead of 1-3-5, then 5-3-1, 3-1-5 so in C you will play C-G-E, G-E-C, E-C-G.

These intervals are to me much more musical and allow you to create more surprise melodically..it sound less like an "exercise".. about the use of these triads i would definitely recommend you to listen to J.S Bach.

So as well as arpeggios, i like to practice these triads over changes and focus on the melodic aspect of a progression, it's about spelling each chords and make it sing to the next using common notes or closest notes available.

You can practice this exercise with any chord progression, the example in the video was made with these changes:

Ab - Db - Gdim - Cm - Fm - Bbm - Eb - Ab

have fun!!! experiment and share!!
