“different ways to get to a note”
Introduction
the following patterns are some common lines highlighting chromatic motion between chord tones. these patterns are actually mouvements to play around a note, kind of “a way to get there”
Explanation
The red note is the target note, the one you want to finish on, since you have to stop on it make sure that note is a chord tone.
Chromaticism & Arpeggios
a chromatic approach to Dm7 arpeggio
Dm7 arpeggio:
D (root), F (b3), A (5), C (b7)
Now, try to use the notes of that arpeggio as targets and play one different pattern before each of these chord tones.
here is an example:
Conclusion
these chromatic patterns are to me a way to create a tension between two notes or into a phrase.
remember that the first and last notes of a musical phrase are the ones that give the harmonical sense of a melody, the idea is to experiment different ways to get these two notes together.
